Welding Techniques for Structural Integrity: MMI Case Study — MQ Iceplex

At MMI, every project is an opportunity for us to push the boundaries of structural fabrication. Our recent work on the MQ Iceplex project demonstrates how we apply advanced welding techniques and use precision fabrication to meet client demands in every project—no matter how large or ambitious.

The Project: MQ Iceplex

Designed to be “the epicenter of ice sports in Southern Arizona,” MQ Iceplex is a massive facility featuring two community ice rinks, a 3,000 seat arena, 15 locker rooms, two party rooms, a pro shop, and a team store. This unique structure will be home to the University of Arizona’s hockey teams, as well as dozens of student and community intramural and recreational ice sports teams.

The MQ Iceplex is slated to open in the fall of 2026.

The Fabrication Challenge

Partnering with Alliance Steel Building Systems from Oklahoma and Image Building Systems (starting in mid-April), MMI took on the responsibility of fabricating assemblies for the MQ Iceplex. While MMI is fabricating only 52 assemblies, the project’s size tells a bigger story: these assemblies total 627,000 pounds of fabricated steel, with some components measuring up to 50 feet in length.

A project at this size and scale demands precision, and MMI was ready to deliver.

Welding Innovation

One defining feature of this project is the extensive use of CJP (complete joint penetration) welds on extremely thick plate steel. Each of these welds must meet strict ultrasonic testing standards in order to ensure complete structural integrity. As such, these welds require advanced technique, careful oversight, and a deep understanding of how steel behaves under stress.

To meet these demands, MMI utilized submerged arc welding—a technique that allows for clean welds with consistent quality, even with thick materials. This strategy allows us to complete high-tonnage jobs like this one with efficiency and precision.

Strength on Display

A striking characteristic of the MQ Iceplex structure is its massive 240-foot span from column to column. These long open stretches demand complete structural integrity from the steel framing and the welds that hold it all together

The sheer scale of the structure allows MMI’s experience and craftsmanship to shine, as we work to ensure that the welds don’t just meet basic engineering specifications, but will exceed expectations for structural integrity over time.

The MMI Difference

Our role in this project demonstrates that when clients work with MMI, they can expect:

  • Welding techniques tailored to the unique demands of the project
  • Rigorous quality control and testing
  • Decades of expertise applied every step of the way

Our role in the MQ Iceplex goes beyond steel delivery. We are working to bring an architectural vision to life, using our innovative welding and fabrication techniques to push the limits of size and complexity. The result: safety and performance that will allow the MQ Iceplex to welcome visitors for years to come.
